One of the fun things we enjoy doing in Kiev is attending an English Practice Class at the National University of Linguistics. We are not teachers but just the “Native Speakers” that visit the class once per week on average. The students have been learning English since they started school. Their comprehension of spoken and written English is very good. If we can help them at all it would be with pronunciation and the use of words in an English country.
They are an enthusiastic group of 12 students in second year at University that have become good friends with each other, as they are now together for 1-1/2 years. Sometimes we use their textbook and at other times we talk about business, travel, and we gave them an assignment to write their resume in response to a job advertised in English. On Dec. 26th they had a party during class. They introduced 2008 as the year of the Mouse. Officially it is the year of the Rat but they think a mouse is friendlier! So many of the gifts that they exchanged were on the theme of a mouse. We received a battery operated mouse piggy bank; it makes a mouse noise when a coin is inserted!
We gave each student a Canadian flag and Julie; the teacher got a pin with the Canadian and Ukrainian flags joined.
